Jupiter – Basics

Jupiter is the planet of Belief, Luck, and Fortune. If you’ve known someone with a well-placed Jupiter, this person would likely be well off financially and full of belief in themselves. Jupiter is known as the Great Benefic because of its potential for wonderful results in things such as Prosperity, Opportunity, Higher Knowledge, and Travel. And He (Jupiter) is likely prominent in the birth charts of your local Banker, Lawyer, Judge, Minister, or Guru. He is expansive and gives abundance through association. His energy, by aspect or placement, in the Ascendant can bring great fortune to the person in question, but this person would likely struggle with keeping their weight down as well… abundance of Self (1st House). As always, keep focused on the disposition of the planet. If he is fortified with a conjunction from the Moon for instance, we could see a person who is in the spotlight, all eyes on them! If Jupiter is associated with Saturn, we could see Jupiter reigned in, restrained, during Saturn/Jupiter Dasha periods. We would see the opposite result during the Jupiter/Saturn when our Great Benefic reigns supreme. There is always balance!

Jupiter’s Sanskrit name is Guru, which fits him all too well. He is the natural karaka (ruler) of Teachers, Mentors, Religious, and Spiritual Leaders. He is also the significator of fertility and is the most important planet to assess regarding children and childbearing. And remember, he is best placed in the Moon’s home of Cancer where his abundance is applied to caring, contentment, and the home.

He matures in your life in your 16th year (ages 15-16) and should reach full strength in your life at that time. Jupiter’s day of the week is Thursday and his effects can be more prominent on this day. His direction is North East. His metal is Tin, and his primary gemstone is Yellow Sapphire. The secondary stones, for those interested, are Yellow Topaz and Yellow Beryl.

He receives dik bala, or directional strength, in the 1st house.

Aspects

In the section below, we will demonstrate how Jupiter aspects the other planets. His aspect is Benefic and will greatly benefit you when in aspect to personal points in the chart. Jupiter will add abundance (more of!) wherever he touches and the nature of that energy is best interpreted separately. Let’s look at some examples.

7th House Aspect

Jupiter aspects the 7th House from himself

In the picture above, Jupiter is in the bottom left corner, in the Sign of Sagittarius. He aspects to the 7th House away from him, which is occupied by the Planet Mercury in Gemini. Jupiter is the Great Benefic and his aspect will greatly improve the Mercury significations for the individual. This aspect is great for intellect and communicative abilities.

1st House Aspect

Jupiter aspects the 1st House from Himself

Adding the Moon to the Sign of Gemini, we have a 1st House Aspect, also called a conjunction. Jupiter in such close proximity to the Moon would likely increase this person's maternal instincts but could also indicate that the person would be well known. The tie between Mercury, from the 7th, to this Jupiter and Moon conjunction would likely make the person a well known writer, speaker, and known for intelligence. The energies go both ways.

5th House Aspect

Jupiter aspects the 5th House from Himself

In the next example, we have the addition of Mars in Aries receiving a 5th House aspect from Jupiter. As usual Jupiter aspects in abundance, this Jupiter would likely bless the individual with athletic ability, courage, and tons of energy. This person could also just be lucky when acting instinctually and whatever House the Sign of Aries equates to would be blessed with a sense of abundance and good fortune. If Aries is the 7th House, for instance, I could see the person having a spouse who is a Commissioned Officer in the Armed Services, a Police Captain or some kind of leader with violent powers, and things of that nature.

9th House Aspect

Jupiter aspects the 9th House from Himself

In the next picture, we have the addition of the Sun receiving a 9th House aspect in the Sign of Leo. While the aspect to the Sun is farther than the other examples, Jupiter aspect would still benefit the person, fill them with a powerful Will and a Confidence to take on the world. All the significations of the Sun would be blessed in this person's life.

Rulership and Placement Disposition

Jupiter's relationship to the Zodiac

Exalted

The Exalted placement for Jupiter is in the sign of Cancer, with the highest point of Exaltation being at exactly 05°. Like with the planets before it, it gradually grows in how Exalted it is the closer that it gets to the 5th degree, the Degree of Exaltation. Jupiter functions extremely well in the sign of Cancer, giving the best results he can give by placement alone when his energy is there. Jupiter here provides an abundance of Contentment, Good Fortune, and makes the House flourish!

Moolatrikona

Jupiter is Moolatrikona in the fist 5 degrees of the Sign of Sagittarius. His energy is very positively expressed in these degrees. Jupiter in Sagittarius is great for higher knowledge and travel.

Own Sign

Jupiter owns two signs and naturally functions very well in his own Homes. He is considered Own Sign while placed after 5 degrees in the sign of Sagittarius and throughout the entire sign of Pisces. Pisces/Jupiter energy tends to manifest as spiritual inclinations.

Friend

All planets like other planets that function well in their homes (houses). Jupiter is friendly with the Mars, the Sun, and the Moon his exalted placement. His energy is positively utilized when placed in the signs they own: Aries/Scorpio, Leo and Cancer respectively.

Neutral

The signs not colored are considered neutral for Jupiter, meaning they neither negatively nor positively impact him by placement. In this case, Jupiter is neither friend nor enemy to Saturn alone. Jupiter functions neutrally in his sign of Aquarius while also being Fallen in Capricorn which will be covered below.

Enemy

Just like all planets have friends, they also have enemies or planets that don’t welcome their presence in their homes or signs. These planets are considered enemies. Jupiter is enemies with Mercury and Venus and functions negatively in the signs, Gemini/Virgo and Taurus/Libra. Think about it rationally. Whether it is too much (Jupiter) intellect (Mercury) or too much feeling (Venus), these are things best balanced.

Fallen

Jupiter is extremely poorly placed in the Sign of Capricorn. His tendency to bring abundance, unfortunately, does not work well in the Sign of Limitations which is Capricorn. While Mars, in the previous module flourished within the boundaries here, Jupiter here tends to make a person stuck, unlucky, and unable to improve their situation. This a person that will likely not have religious or spiritual beliefs.
